Each trip has a single page holding the same six things: the number of nights, the figure one person pays with two people to a room, what the operating company secures before you leave home, what is left to you once you are there, the rung the trip sits on, and the two trips standing immediately above and below it. That last part lets the catalogue be walked in either direction. From a fortnight with a guide at breakfast every morning you are one link away from the same country with a guide on four days only, and one link further from a room, a car and a week nobody has filled in. The figures run from $1,951 to $6,545 a person.

The five rungs, a page each

A rung page gathers the trips that ask the same amount of you and states what that amount is. The first has somebody waiting when you land and a guide beside the party most mornings. The fifth holds a permit, a ranger, a boat that goes once a week and the single bed available where you are going. One rung is worth no more than another, and the rung pages say so where a reader is most likely to assume otherwise.
